Bourbon Street

New Orleans, LA
March 2001

New Orleans was bigger, dirtier, funkier and more seductive than we expected. We arrived on a Sunday, the day after St Patrick's Day and the first weekend of spring break. The French Quarter was packed. The air was cool, but we could almost feel the humid heat of summer rising through the frilly wrought iron balconies and hanging ferns. Bourbon Street was like an old leather shoe, worn down and accommodating.  We heard music everywhere. Street performers entertained. Kids with bottle caps stuck to the soles of their shoes tap danced for change. We ate muffulettas for lunch and refreshed ourselves with beignets and café au lait in the afternoon.
