Jeanerette, LA
March 2001
Dear Jake & Amelia,
We have been driving through Cajun country in southern Louisiana. We
are passing through Victorian towns, through workers villages,
past rice fields, along bayous, and past fields of sugar cane stumps. We
stopped at LeJeune's Bakery in Jeanerette to buy fresh French Bread and
Ginger Cake. We asked where to eat lunch. We walked by the store front
twice before finding the Country Kitchen. Inside was a sign "Order
crawfish pies a day early." As we left we told the owner that we
wished we had known to call ahead for the crawfish pie. She heard our
accents and insisted on sending us away with the gift of two pies from a
local's order. Down the road we came upon a working sugar cane
mill. The forms and shapes of the buildings and machinery
captivated us.
