Starry Eyed Mask

Hueco Tanks, TX
April 2001

Dear Jake & Amelia,
As we drove towards the western edge of Texas, we could see sandstorms off in the distance. Then the winds blew around us and the sky turned tan. Not a cloud of tan but a pale flat even tan, the same color as the land. We were in the middle of a sand storm. We had driven to Hueco Tanks State Park, just east of El Paso. The wind died down at night.

We were there to see ancient rock art.  Hueco Tanks holds stories of ancient cultures that begin 10,000 years ago. People came because of  water that collects  in large depressions, or huecos, in the rock formations. They left their marks. Most of the art was either in obscure locations or in restricted areas that required a guide. We walked paths, crawled up rocks, scampered and slid into cool caves to view it.  The rock art was incredible. The most striking were geometric designs and masks from the Mogollon culture, circa 1150 AD. They conveyed humor, personality and power.
