Solstice at Chaco
Canyon, NM
June 2001
Dear Jake & Amelia,
We celebrated the summer solstice by watching Zuni dancers perform
traditional social dances on the plaza of Pueblo Bonito. About eight
dancers performed in full regalia, accompanied by flute and drum. We saw
portions of the deer, buffalo, eagle and water dances. The Zunis, along
with other modern puebloan people, are descendants of the ancient
peoples who built the great houses in Chaco Canyon. The dancers were
happy to be here. The flute player, Fernando Celicion, said that he
could feel their ancestors around them. He could feel them preparing for
the celebration, then watching them dance. The dances brought bright
colors and sounds to the long quiet walls.
