Arches National
Park, UT
July 2001
Dear Jake & Amelia,
The rock formations here are beautiful. Some are crisp cut blocks;
others, soft and organic. We walked to several arches, immense windows
to landscapes beyond. We hiked into the canyon leading to Devil's Garden. Hugh
rock walls soared high around us. We saw lightning and rain
stretching down to the rocks ahead and heard booming thunder. Dark
clouds had gathered. The wind slapped dust at us, the same wind
that proceeded a heavy rain the previous day. We turned around and
walked out of the canyon. The rain didn't come down. The sun dropped
below the gray clouds and lit the rocks with late afternoon
light. The formations glowed. The grasses, sage and juniper were washed
in gold. We stopped often as we drove out, watching the clouds turn
pastel rose as the La Sal Mountains turned steel gray.
