Zion, UT
August 2001
Dear Jake & Amelia,
We drove into Zion from the east on Zion-Mount Carmel Highway.
After passing through two narrow tunnels, we wound down the mountain
side on switchbacks. We were in the canyon, among the rocks. At that low
elevation, 4000 feet, the air was hot. And it was muggy. Craggy rock
formations, pale gray, pink and tan, thrust up almost 3000 feet above
us. In Zion Canyon, deep gray cliffs towered above the shade of
cottonwoods, willows and velvet ashes. Their cragginess was softened by
hot mist. Pine and fir, perched on distant ledges high in the sky,
looked tiny.
