Little House in Humboldt Redwoods

Humboldt Redwoods, CA
August 2001

Dear Jake & Amelia,
We continued north following the Eel River on Route 254, the Avenue of the Giants. We passed innumerable opportunities for tourist kitsch including wooden carvings of bears, drive through trees and signs proclaiming incredible things.

The State Forest was quiet of all that. The already small road narrowed as it squeezed between giant redwoods. We stopped to walk through the forest. We craned our necks to look up up up to the tops of trees soaring above us. Cascades of warm colored sunlight tumbled into the cool blue forest. The forest was pretty. The redwood are imposing giants, slender and graceful. They soar.
