Lake McDonald

Going-to-the-Sun Road, MT
August 2001

Dear Jake & Amelia,
We drove into Glacier National Park from the west. We drove the length of Lake McDonald. The views across its silky waters were pretty in spite of a haze. Smoke from forest fires burning west of the Park had settled in the valley. The road began to climb. We drove through a short tunnel, and then around a switchback. We looked down, surprised at how fast we had gained elevation. The sky was blue. The haze was thinner. Craggy mountains rose up across the valley. They were chiseled and folded where Mt. Hood was fractured.

We passed beneath five mountain goats, each lying on its own rock shelf, stately staring down at passing cars. We drove by the Weeping Wall which was only tearing, water seeping from the rocks. Wildflowers bloomed in mountain fields. We drove through Logan Pass, slipping between tall blue mountains and crossing the Continental Divide at 6,646 feet. We looked at Jackson Glacier through our binoculars, feeling the movement of the slow flow of compressed ice.

All this was on Going-to-the-Sun Road. It was a wonderful drive. The road was narrow. To our right, the mountainside fell sharply. To our left, the road often hugged the mountains. The drive and the views were breathtaking. To travel on the Road, vehicles are required to meet length and width size restrictions. The reasons had become clear.
