Amelia Island, FL
February, 2001
Dear Jake & Amelia,
On our way south we stopped at The Florida Inn in Fernandina Beach
for lunch. We walked into a room filled with long tables groaning under
the weight of platters heaped with food. The waitress whisked by,
telling us not to worry, she'd bring our food soon. Plate after plate of
food was placed in front of us: fried chicken, chicken with dumplings,
green beans, greens, creamed corn, black eyed peas, squash pudding,
biscuits, cornbread, and pitchers of iced tea. The others at the table
taught us to shake homemade pepper vinegar from a Crow Royal bottle onto
our greens. They offered us butter, a golden scoop of smoothness. Wow.
We joked and talked with our tablemates, filled our bellies, and
ate a bit of both desserts: banana pudding and lemon cake. We waddled
out of town, happy.
