Slough Creek

Yellowstone, WY
August 2001

Dear Jake & Amelia,
Yellowstone is a vast and varied place. We saw grasslands, lakes, mountains,  forest, sulfur springs and geysers; wolves, raptures, coyote, bison, and elk. Vast remnants of the fire of 1988 still remained.

We hiked to the bottom of Tower Fall. We felt cool mist on our faces and smelt a slight odor of  sulfur. As we climbed back up, the sun warmed both the day and the juniper oils, producing a pleasant fragrance at the trailhead.

The colors of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone were pale, soft golds, yellows and pinks. One thousand feet below the rim, the River cascaded through the narrow canyon. The waters emitted the now familiar sulfur smell as they turned from turquoise blue to frothy white. The blue sky was  full of white clouds.

At Lookout Point, we looked down at an osprey perched atop a rock spire far below us. At Artist's Point, the clouds hid the sun. Suddenly, the mist at the bottom of the falls lit up as sunlight slipped into the canyon. The canyon walls remained mysterious, creating a beautiful image. We photographed a family laughing, smiling, having a great time at a family reunion, and they photographed us.
