Custer State park

Custer State Park, SD
September 2001

Dear Jake & Amelia,
We camped at a small quiet campground in Custer State Park. We parked beside a beautiful cliff face of rugged gray rock. Tall straight spruce trees grew from tiny rock shelves creating a composition of vertical trees and horizontal cracks. The park is full of wildlife. We saw big horn sheep, prong horn sheep, begging burros, wild turkey, bison and prairie dogs.

We drove the Wildlife Loop Road. We passed solitary buffalo bulls. The sun turned the prairie grasses a pale golden. We found the buffalo herd above the stone and log herder's house. We watched the buffalo grazing, scratching, staring, nursing calves and taking dirt baths. Their tongues were big and long, their huge heads accented by their curved horns.
