Postcard from Nancy & Peter

Wichita Mountains, OK
April, 2001

Dear Jake & Amelia,
We decided to head south to Texas, spring and wildflowers. On the way we drove to the Wichita Mountains State Park. The wildlife refuge here protects herds of buffalo, elk and long horn cattle. A sign just inside the entrance informed us that these animals were free range and dangerous. Just beyond the sign, buffalo were grazing right beside the road. We stopped the truck and reached for our  cameras. The big guy closest to us lifted his massive head. It filled up the wide angle lens. We were staring eye to eye. We dropped our cameras and said "Maybe this isn't safe." The buffalo stepped sideways and we took his photo. We wish that we had snapped the first one. It's the one that got away.
