Seminole Canyon

Seminole Canyon, TX
April 2001

Dear Jake & Amelia,
We drove south to Del Rio, then headed west to Seminole Canyon State Park. We drove into the desert. Danny had told us about  ancient cave paintings that sounded interesting. They were stunning. The 3 to 4 thousand year old images had been painted in reds, gold, browns, black and white. Three paintings in Fate Bell cave were of shamans twelve to fifteen feet tall. The current theory is that they were painted to explain the mysteries of the underworld during ceremonial gatherings.

We camped there that night. The afternoon hike down the canyon was hot. When we got to the campsite, a gentle breeze was blowing. The wind became stronger and stronger until it was roaring across the Texan prairie with a sharp cracking. The camper was shaking and rattling. It was like trying to sleep in a giant flag. We put the top down on the camper, reducing the noise to a dull roar and slept on the lower berth. Later, we found out that the wind blew a semi-tractor trailer over that night.

Texas has a way of making you feel small.
