Approaching Devil's Tower

Devil's Tower, WY
September 2001

Dear Jake & Amelia,
We sat at the base of Devil's Tower and listened to a Plains Indian legend. Seven small girls were playing by a river. A large bear began to chase them. They ran as fast as they could towards their village. The bear was about to catch them so they jumped up on a large rock and began to pray. The rock heard their pleas and began to rise up into the sky. The bear tried to reach the girls. He jumped and clawed at the side of the rock creating groves as he slid back down to the ground. The girls were pushed up into the sky. Today they reside in the sky as the group of seven stars that we call the Pleiades.
